WASHINGTON - The House has voted to bring back the steel penny, saying it would be cheaper to make. Currently, the government loses money on every one-cent coin it makes because of rising metal prices.
The bill would direct the Mint to begin producing, within nine months, pennies made out of copper-plated steel - not the zinc-copper alloy currently used. The measure also recommends the phasing in of steel nickels over the next two years.

India's Tata Steel could bid for a stake in Indonesia's largest steel maker PT Krakatau Steel, according to a report here Saturday.
"Tata (Steel) has also expressed their interest in finding out more details in the Krakatau Steel privatisation," the industry ministry's director general for metal, Ansari Bukhari, told state-run news agency Antara.

Chavez threatens to expropriate steel maker Sidor. By CHRISTOPHER TOOTHAKER
President Hugo Chavez threatened on Sunday to expropriate Venezuela's largest steel maker due to what he said are the soon-to-be-nationalized company's excessive compensation demands.
Chavez said he could not help but laugh when he heard that Sidor's parent company, Luxembourg-based Ternium SA, is asking for at least US$4 billion (euro2.56 billion) in compensation for its 60 percent stake in Sidor.

Copper to evade large price drops in next 2 years.
Copper prices will evade large drops in price for the next two years or even longer because of supply disruptions and delays to planned projects, Macquarie said in a report Monday.
Aside from disruptions because of strikes and maintenance at operations running at or close to capacity, increasing government demands for higher royalties and profit taxes or greater stakes in projects are hampering development in many areas, the bank said.
IISI reports: world steel demand to grow 6.7 pct in 2008.
World steel demand will grow by 6.7 percent year-on-year to 1.28 billion tonnes in 2008, research group the International Iron and Steel Institute said on Monday.
This would be a record for steel use, industry data show.
China's steel exports in March surged 1.05 million tons month-on-month to 4.16 million tons, driven by the widening price gap between domestic and international markets, which extends to US$100 to US$200 per ton.
The exports in March were also boosted by the undelivered goods in the previous month and the tax rebate abolition for the exported energy-consuming goods was beginning to pay off, according to industry expert Xu Xiangchun, who expected more tightening policies to put out if monthly exports surpass 400 tons.
The largest steel mill in Venezuela, Ternium-Sidor is to be nationalized, according to a presidential decision made following yet another strike closure. Ternium-Sidor, which is sixty percent owned by Argentineans was not able to reach an agreement with unions on wages. When the work force went out on strike President Hugo Chavez ordered its nationalization.

Lecco, 7th April 2008 - Three days ago WIRE & TUBE + METAV 2008, the greatest international appointment of the field, came to a conclusion. As we announced, wiredrawing.net’s staff was present, too, with a stand of its own in pavilion 13.
Far more than expected, the project aroused the interest of an enormous amount of visitors. Our staff distributed 30,000 pens and leaflets signed wiredrawing.net, increasing therefore considerably the notoriety of the website and the traffic of the last and the next days. On the “new business” side, we have directly contacted more than 300 companies, all operating in the field. Our staff had the chance to illustrate them the website in all the details, in all its potentialities.

PROMILLS: Rolls and modular Rolling Cassettes for all application and for all wire drawing lines.
Since many years the rolling cassettes have been introduced in the wire plants. Today they are commonly used for a wide range of applications. They often allow either to overpass the limits of the classic die wire drawing or to suit new products through new methods. Even though the purpose is always the cold shaping of the metallic wire sections, they use rolls instead of classic dies. Despite of the exceptions that could be moved around the use of the rollling cassettes, it is undeniable they represent now a reality together with and the advantages that can be drawn.
In this context, the italian company PROMILLS specializing in the cold shaping of the metallic wire sections and thanks to a multi-decennial experience in the field of the cold roll forming and drawing process, has developped and set-up a design system that allows to obtain a very wide range of rolling cassettes by using just a few standardized components.
PROMILLS trough his MODULAR SYSTEM is able since several years to fit into either old or brand new drawing lines the right standard or upon request rolling cassette. Up today more than 50 models of standard or special rolling cassettes have been put in operation and we can estimate that under the same system it is possible to built up more than hundred different standard models or configurations (theoretically 361 excluded special models). In the light of what above it is quite sure that it is possible to operate in order to build a sequence of rolling groups to suit any kind of wire profile within a range of round equivalent diameters of 1-16 mm.
Each rolling cassette is made of 1 or 2 groups of rolls. Each group can have 2, 3 or 4 rolls within an range of outer diameter from 80 to 210 mm. The following table shows some possible combinations of homogeneous rolling groups:
Japan's Nippon Steel Corp. plans to build a new production facility in Brazil amid stiff competition with rivals such as ArcelorMittal in fast-growing economies, a report said Tuesday.
Japan's biggest steelmaker Nippon Steel expects to spend between 500 and 600 billion yen (5.0-6.0 billion dollars) on the mill in the southeastern city of Cubatao, the Nikkei business daily said without citing sources.

31 March to 4 April 2008: INTERNATIONAL TRADE FAIR TUBE 2008, Düsseldorf. Eurolls Spa confirms its presence at the 2008 edition of the International Trade Fair TUBE Düsseldorf which has become a reference for both technology and equipment.
In particular Eurolls Spa will illustrate its equipment for the continuous cleaning and surface passivation of stainless steel tubes which are welded and, if required, annealed in-line. This process permits, when pickling of the inner tube surface is not required, to cut the finished tube structure and to transfer these directly to the final packing process thereby avoiding the movement of the tube bundles in static pickling processes.
New Delhi: steel industry against regulator in the sector.
The steel industry hit back at the Steel Ministry for suggesting a regulator in the sector saying it will be a retrograde step that will "put the manufacturers between two prongs of a pincer".
"While steel manufacturers shared the government's concern about current price situation… any attempt to regulate market forces operating on steel prices disregarding root causes is a retrograde step and will adversely affect growth of the industry," Indian Steel Alliance (ISA) Moosa Raza said in a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
